Chiefs Battle Back but Fall Just Short to Lakers

PETERBOROUGH — The Six Nations Chiefs suffered a minor setbackThursday night, falling 10-7 to the Peterborough Lakers in a hard-fought contest at the Peterborough Memorial Centre.

Despite trailing early, the Chiefs (12-1-0) showed their trademark resilience, clawing back in the second and third periods to make it a one-goal game late before the Lakers sealed the victory with a pair of late tallies.

Larson Sundown led the way for Six Nations with a pair of goals, including one in the first period and another midway through the third to narrow the gap. Lyle Thompson and Josh Byrne each added power play markers in the final frame, while Brendan Bomberry and Randy Staats contributed key goals in a furious second-period rally that saw the Chiefs score three times in the final five minutes to cut into a sizable Peterborough lead.

Peterborough came out fast, building a 3-1 lead after the first and extending it to 7-1 midway through the second period on the strength of a Carter Page hat trick and a pair of goals from Thomas Hoggarth. The Chiefs answered with three straight to close the period, and continued their push in the third with goals from Thompson, Byrne, and Sundown.

The Chiefs pulled within one at 8-7 on Sundown’s second of the night, but Page struck for his third on a late power play to restore a two-goal cushion for the Lakers. Mike Robinson added an insurance marker with just over a minute to play.

Goaltenders Doug Jamieson and Warren Hill combined for 40 saves in the Chiefs’ net, while Nick Rose turned aside 48 for Peterborough in a busy night at the other end.

The Chiefs will look to rebound on Sunday evening when they visit the Cobourg Kodiaks at the Cobourg Community Centre. Game time is 6:00 p.m.
