Austin Staats scored four times, while older brother Randy added two, leading the Six Nations Chiefs to a 10-7 win over the Peterborough Lakers in Game 1 of the Major Series Lacrosse final Tuesday night at the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena.
The Chiefs now lead the best-of-seven MSL final series 1-0.
Turner Evans got the Lakers off to the start they were hoping for, striking first, two minutes into the game. But the Chiefs bounced back in a big way, scoring five straight to finish off the first frame. Austin Staats led the way with a pair of goals, while Randy Staats, Ben McIntosh, and Lyle Thompson added singles.
Austin Staats kept the momentum going early in the second period, scoring his third of the game. He added another later on, while Eric Fannell and Randy Staats added to the lead. Holden Cattoni led the Lakers charge with a pair of second-period goals, while younger brother Taite Cattoni added one. Mike Robinson also scored for the Lakers.
The Lakers looked to close the gap with Taite Cattoni and Kiel Matisz getting their team within striking distance. Thompson scored his second goal of the night to add some insurance.
GAme 2 of the series is Thursday at the Peterborough Memorial Centre at 8 p.m.
