Chiefs sweep Lakers to win MSL title
For the first time since 2016, the Six Nations Chiefs are Major Series Lacrosse champions.
Austin Staats scored three times and added a hat trick, while Warren Hill was nearly flawless between the pipes to lead the Chiefs to a 10-5 win over the Peterborough Lakers.
With the win, the Chiefs swept the best-of-seven MSL final 4-0.
The Chiefs got off to a roaring start, with Lyle Thompson striking twice 20 seconds apart less than three minutes into the game. Austin Staats then scored two of his own within a four-minute span. Keil Matisz had the lone Lakers response in transition.
The Lakers dominated the second period, silencing the Peterborough Memorial Centre crowd thanks to Randy Staats, Shayne Jackson, Bryan Cole, and Austin Staats.
In the third period, the Lakers showed the heart of a champion, with Matt Gilray, Josh Currier, Holden Cattoni, and Austin Hasen cutting the lead. But the Chiefs kept the distance thanks to goals from Eric Fannell and Tim Edwards.
For his dominating performance throughout the playoffs, Austin Staats
was awarded the Shooter Davis MSL Final Most Valuable Player.
The Chiefs will now take on the winner of the Western Lacrosse Association final between the Langley Thunder and New Westminster Salmonbellies.
