Autty Staats scores seven in Game 1 win over Kodiaks

Austin Staats scored seven times to lead the Six Nations Chiefs to a 15-3 win over the Cobourg Kodiaks in Game 1 of the Major Series Lacrosse semifinal.

The Chiefs lead the best-of-seven series 1-0.

Austin Staats opened the scoring off a Randy Staats pass at 2:24, followed by Larson Sundown converting an Austin Staats pass at 4:18.

Austin Staats continued to shine as he opened the second period by scoring on the powerplay off a Tyson Bell feed in transition, followed by Randy Staats converting a Lyle Thompson feed at 2:39 to open a four-goal lead.

The Kodiaks finally got on the board when Austin Murphy found Marshall Powless. Powless fired a laser to the top corner at 4:27 on the powerplay. But Austin Staats answered immediately scoring unassisted just 33 seconds later. Bell then added to the Chiefs lead by going in all alone and shoveling an underhand shot past Steven Orleman at 7:01.

The Chiefs onslaught continued when Randy Staats found Thompson with a no-look behind the back pass. Thompson made no mistake at 8:44. Austin Staats scored the next two goals. His fifth goal of the night was from in front all alone at 10:56, followed by a howitzer from the outside off a Ty Logan pass at 12:38. 

Jackson Brown replaced Steven Orleman in goal and was welcomed to the game by Shayne Jackson scoring off a Logan feed as well just 20 seconds into the goalie change. Jackson scored again in transition again converting a Logan feed at 19:19.

The Chiefs opened the third period scoring in transition when Bryan Cole picked the top corner off a long lead pass from Warren Hill at 5:03. the Kodiaks finally got back on the board when Carson Moyer converted a Tyler Hendryks feed at 5:44, followed by Curtis Romancych scoring from in tight at 9:04.

Austin Staats scored his seventh of the night off a Liam LeClair feed at 12:40, followed by Thompson converting an Austin Staats pass at 14:36 on the powerplay.
