Chiefs strike first

Randy Staats and Jeff Shattler have always loved stepping up in big games and the pair certainly did that Tuesday night at the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena.
Staats scored four goals and Shattler netted three along with three helpers, to lead the Six Nations Pro-Fit Chiefs to a 9-6 victory over the Brampton Excelsiors.
The win gives the Chiefs a 1-0 lead in the best-of-seven Major Series Lacrosse semifinal.
Stephen Keogh got the Chiefs going in the first five minutes of the game, before Chris Corbeil responded four minutes later.
But then Staats took the game over, scoring three goals in five minutes, giving the Chiefs a lead after one period.
After Joe Resetarits inched the Excelsiors back with his first of three goals on the night, Staats added another, before Shattler caught fire, scoring a hat trick in a four-minute span.
Resetarits added another goal to close out the second period.
In the third period, Mike Burke, Resetarits and Mike Melnychenko got the Excelsiors closer, but Dillon Ward shut the door.
Johnny Powless added some insurance, scoring five minutes into the frame.
Ward picked up his first playoff win of the season, making 34 saves, while Tyler Carlson took the loss thwarting away 38 shots.
Game 2 of the series is Thursday in Brampton at 8pm, with Game 3 back at the ILA Saturday at 7pm.
