Bell, Smith lead Chiefs to victory over North Stars

MEAFORD — Tyson Bell and Ryan Smith each netted hat tricks to lead the Six Nations Chiefs to a 12-5 win over the Owen Sound North Stars in Major Series Lacrosse action Saturday night in Meaford.

Bell opened the scoring early with an unassisted goal, but Owen Sound responded with back-to-back markers from Dylan Watson and Isiah Moran-Weekes to briefly grab the lead. The Chiefs answered with three straight, as Cody Jamieson tied the game before Bell struck again with his second of the night to give Six Nations a 3-2 edge after one.

In the second period, Ryan Smith buried his first of the game to extend the lead, followed by a goal from Latrell Harris. Smith then added a shorthanded tally to make it 6-2. After Owen Sound’s Jake McNabb pulled one back, Bell completed his hat trick before the end of the frame, giving the Chiefs a 7-3 cushion heading into the third.

Josh Byrne opened the final period with a power-play goal. Owen Sound answered with markers from Mitch Wilde and Josh Sanchez, but Six Nations kept pressing. Larson Sundown and Brendan Bomberry each added goals before Smith completed his hat trick late in the period. Josh Ricci capped off the scoring with a final marker in the closing seconds.

Warren Hill got the win between the pipes with a great effort, while Kaleb Martin had a strong performance in the loss.

The win improves the Chiefs record to 4-1, and continue their weekend road trip to Cobourg on Sunday night at 6pm. The North Stars drop to 2-3.
