Chiefs power past Kodiaks to complete road trip
COBOURG — A first-period surge vaulted the Six Nations Chiefs to a 12-7 win over the Cobourg Kodiaks Sunday night at the Cobourg Community Centre. The victory capped a long weekend for the 4-1 Chiefs, who collected four points in less than 24 hours while clocking 779 kilometres on the road.
The Chiefs exploded for seven goals in a frantic opening period, setting the tone early. Latrell Harris got things started midway through the frame, and the offense poured it on from there. Dawson Theede struck twice, while Ryan Smith, Larson Sundown, Brendan Bomberry, and Shayne Jackson added singles as Six Nations built a commanding 7-3 lead after one.
Cody Jamieson netted the eventual game-winner early in the second period before Jackson added a powerplay marker to extend the lead. The Kodiaks battled back in the third, with Brock Haley and Aaron Woods leading the charge, but the Chiefs' early work proved too much to overcome.
Smith and Sundown both finished with two goals apiece, while Jamieson added a goal and five assists to pace the Six Nations offense. The Chiefs’ depth proved critical again, with eight different players finding the back of the net.
The victory wrapped up a demanding weekend for the Chiefs, who downed Owen Sound 12-5 on Saturday night in Meaford before making the long trip to Cobourg for Sunday’s contest.
THe Chiefs return home Tuesday, when they host the Owen Sound North Stars at 8pm.
