Chiefs overpower Kodiaks in 16-7 win

The Six Nations Chiefs put on a clinic Tuesday night at the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena, overwhelming the Cobourg Kodiaks 16-7 in Major Series Lacrosse action.

The Chiefs’ offence fired on all cylinders, striking for six goals in the opening period, adding five more in the second, and closing it out with five in the third. Ryan Smith, Lyle Thompson, and Shayne Jackson each recorded hat tricks, while Brad Kri and Larson Sundown netted two goals apiece. Josh Byrne, Dhane Smith, and Latrell Harris rounded out the scoring.

The Chiefs outshot Cobourg 47-44, with goaltender Doug Jamieson turning in a solid performance to earn the win between the pipes.

Special teams were a major factor in the Chiefs' victory. They capitalized on two powerplay opportunities and were especially dangerous while down a man, scoring four shorthanded goals on the night.

The Chiefs opened the game in dominant fashion, outscoring the Kodiaks 6-3 in the first period. Smith, Thompson, and Byrne each found the back of the net in the opening frame, while Kri, Dhane Smith, and Sundown added to the early lead.

The defending Mann Cup champs kept the pressure going in the second period, with Kri, Harris, and Sundown scoring, before Jackson scored back-to-back goals late in the frame.

The Chiefs didn’t let up in the third, as Thompson completed his hat trick, Jackson tallied his third of the game, and Ryan Smith capped off his three-goal performance.

Cobourg’s Alex Marinier led the Kodiaks with a hat trick of his own, while Brock Haley scored twice in the loss. Zach Thompson and Aaron Woods netted one goal each.

The win improves Six Nations to 6-1 on the season. The Chiefs are back in action Thursday when they visit the Brampton Excelsiors.
