The Oakville Rock showed why there will be no pushovers when the Major Series Lacrosse playoffs begin.
Dhane Smith was the hero Monday, scoring two goals in 26 seconds in the closing moments of the game to give the Six Nations Pro-Fit Chiefs a 9-8 victory over the Rock on the road.
With the win, the defending MSL and Mann Cup champions conclude the regular season at the top with a 15-3 record.
But to get win No. 15, the Chiefs had to earn it.
After Jeff Shattler gave the Chiefs an early one-goal lead in the final frame, Brett Hickey and Brenden Thenhaus responded and put the Rock ahead, setting up Smith's heroics.
The Rock jumped out to a first period lead thanks to goals from Jason Noble, Wes Berg, Thenhaus and Alex Crepinsek.
Craig Point netted a pair and Vaughn Harris added one to keep the Chiefs within one.
In the second period, Point added two more to lead the way for the Chiefs, with Shattler adding his first goal of the game.
Dillon Ward returned to the Chiefs net and earned the win in a 29-save effort, while Steve Fryer took the loss, making 37 saves.
The Chiefs now wait for the rest of the league to finish their regular season schedules, and will face either the Rock, Brampton Excelsiors, or the Brooklin Redmen. With a win last night, the Rock would have eliminated the Redmen from the playoffs.
When the playoff opponent and schedule is determined, it will be posted on our website. Tentatively, Game 1 is slated for Tuesday.
