Jackson nets hat trick to lead Chiefs over Lakers

A second-period surge and timely third-period goals lifted the Six Nations Chiefs to a hard-fought 9-6 victory over the Peterborough Lakers on Tuesday night at the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena.

The Chiefs rallied from an early deficit and leaned on a balanced offensive effort and a strong showing from goaltender Doug Jamieson to secure the win in front of their home crowd.

The Lakers came out fast, with Joe Resetarits continuing his torrid pace this season, opening the scoring at 16:34 of the first period. The visitors carried much of the early play, outshooting the Chiefs 17-15 in the opening frame and taking a 3-2 lead into the intermission.

Ian MacKay and Shayne Jackson each found the net for the Chiefs in the first, while Resetarits struck twice for the Lakers and Holden Cattoni added another to give the visitors the early edge.

The tide turned in the second period when the chiefs found its offensive rhythm. Ryan Smith’s goal at 18:55 kicked off a run of four unanswered goals for the Chiefs in the frame. Jackson notched his second of the night less than a minute later, followed by tallies from Jackson again at 7:44 and a power-play marker from MacKay at 4:51 to give the Chiefs a 6-4 lead heading into the final period.

The Lakers tried to claw back in the third, but it was Six Nations who struck first when Latrell Harris buried the eventual game-winner at 14:14. Ryan Smith added another less than a minute later with a determined solo effort, extending the Chiefs' lead to 8-4.

The Lakers responded with two shorthanded goals from Brad McCulley and Holden Cattoni to cut the deficit to 8-6, but a late power-play goal by Tim Edwards with 1:33 remaining sealed the win for Six Nations.

Jamieson turned aside 42 shots in the win, while Nick Rose made 37 saves for Peterborough in a losing effort.

With the win, the Chiefs improve to 9-1 and take over first place in Major Series Lacrosse, while Peterborough drops to 7-3.

The will look to carry their momentum into the long weekend with a road game Saturday against the Brooklin Lacrosse Club.
