Chiefs clinch first place with OT win over Lakers

 

 

Lyle Thompson scored his fourth goal of the night with just under three minutes to go in sudden-death overtime to give the Six Nations Chiefs a 9-8 victory over the Peterborough Lakers Thursday in front of over 3,300 people at the Peterborough Memorial Centre.

Thompson's fourth goal and sixth point on the night clinched first place for the Chiefs and home-floor advantage during the Major Series Lacrosse playoffs.

The game began with Thompson scoring seven seconds into the game thanks to an opening faceoff win and a pass from his brother Jeremy. Holden Cattoni responded, but Sam Leclair gave the Chiefs the lead late in the frame.

The Chiefs got off to a quick start in the second period, with Randy Staats and Ty Logan widening the gap. But the Lakers came right back with four unanswered goals. Thomas Hoggarth led the way with a pair, while Mike Robinson and Cattoni added one each.

The MSL rivals went punch-for-punch in the third period. Lyle Thompson scored a pair for the Chiefs, with Brendan Bomberry adding another before Tyson Bell forced overtime with just under six minutes remaining in regulation time. Robert Hope, Eli McLaughlin, and Colton Armstrong scored for the Lakers.

Warren Hill won the goaltenders duel, stopping 52 shots, while Landon Kells was equally spectacular making 49 saves.
