Chiefs bounce back to defeat Kodiaks

 


The Six Nations had to dig deep to score a 12-9 come from behind win over the Cobourg Kodiaks Tuesday night in Major Series Lacrosse action.

The first period was all Kodiaks. They got off to a fast start with Austin Murphy converting a Nile Cyr pass at 1:31, followed by Tanner Buck finishing off a Marshall Powless pass 24 seconds later. Curtis Conley grabbed a loose ball and went coast-to-coast, firing a shot into the short side corner to grab an early three goal lead. David Anderson converted a  Powless pass from long distance to beat Doug Jamieson to the short side corner as well at 12:16.

The Chiefs finally got on the board when Lyle Thompson flipped a pass to Randy Staats, who scored from in close at 12:16, but Tyler Hendryks answered back off an Anderson pass at 14:42.

Curtis Romancych increased the Kodiaks lead with a short-handed goal off a Rowan Kelly feed at 17:35. But that was answered by Bryan Cole scoring on the powerplay off a Lyle Thompson pass at 18:18. 

 Hendryks continued the Kodiaks momentum early in teh second period when he opened the scoring in transition off a long lead pass from Jackson Brown at 59 seconds. But Austin Staats answered off a  Cole feed at 4:24. Randy Staats converted a Lyle Thompson pass on the powerplay at 7:21, but a blast from Murphy restored the four goal Kodiaks lead.

Austin Staats narrowed the lead with a blast off a Cody Jamieson pass at 13:58, followed by Lyle Thompson scoring off a Jeremy Thompson pass off the faceoff eight seconds later.  Lyle Thompson scored again to bring the game within one goal converting an Austin Staats pass just 26 seconds later. Austin Staats then tied the game finishing off a Brendan Bomberry pass at 15:33. The Chiefs continued the barrage when Sam LeClair made a nice move in front of the net off a Brendan Bomberry pass at 17:19. 

Cobourg had the goalie pulled with final possession to end the period, however, Six Nations gained possession and Tyson Bell scored a beauty behind the back shot in transition at 19:50.

Buck opened the third-period scoring on the power play, converting a Powless pass at 1:43. But the Chiefs answered on the power play. While the Kodiaks were down two men, Randy Staats converted an Austin Staats pass at 7:44.

Cobourg tried to press, but the Chiefs defense held strong.

With just 2:37 left  Bomberry scored off a Randy Staats pass to give the Chiefs a three-goal lead.
