Brodie Merrill makes debut in win over Redmen

The Six Nations Pro-Fit Chiefs were busy not only on the floor this week, but off of it, making a couple of deals to round out its Major Series Lacrosse roster.
After Andrew Watt made his Chiefs debut Tuesday in the win over the Peterborough Lakers, Brodie Merrill played his first game as a Chief Wednesday and had one assist and played a huge role in transition, in an 8-5 victory over the Brooklin Redmen on the road.
Craig Point led the way with two goals and two assists, and Dhane Smith, who netted one and added a helper to the cause.
After Reilly O'Connor got the Redmen out to a lead midway through the first, Point's shot tied things up with 39 seconds left in the period.
The Chiefs took over in the second period, with Smith starting things off early in the frame, while Jeff Shattler, Johnny Powless and Point scored in a three minute span to pull away.
Dan Lintner responded for the Redmen.
In the third period, Stephen Keogh added to the Chiefs lead, before Shawn Williams and Josh Gilray tried to get the Redmen back into the game. Jay Thorimbert netted another Chiefs goal before Williams scored one more, while Dave Brock added an empty-netter in the game's closing seconds.
Mann Cup Most Valuable Player, Brandon Miller made his first start of the season for the Chiefs and got the win, making 36 saves, while Mike Poulin made 51 in a losing effort.
The Chiefs made the deal for Merrill Wednesday with the Oakville Rock, who received a pair of players to be named in 2016, plus other considerations. The Rock also receive a first-round draft pick from the Kitchener-Waterloo Kodiaks, that they had had received from the Chiefs in an earlier trade.
Watt arrived at the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena Tuesday after general manager Duane Jacobs acquired him in a deal with the Kodiaks, that sent Troy Gardener and a player to be named later in 2016 the other way.
With the regular season officially half over, the Chiefs lead Major Series Lacrosse with an 8-1 record.
The Chiefs kick off the second half of the season Tuesday night at the ILA, when they host the Redmen at 8pm.
