Byrne nets five, Jackson has eight-point night to lead Chiefs to road win in Cobourg


 

Josh Byrne, Shayne Jackson and the Six Nations Chiefs offence rolled like a steam engine Sunday night, defeating the Cobourg Kodiaks 19-9 on the road to complete a busy opening week in Major Series Lacrosse for the defending Mann Cup champions.

Playing in their third game in six days, Byrne scored five times, while Jackson had a hat trick to pace the Chiefs offence.

 Dhane Smith, Byrne, David Peterkin, Travis Longboat and Andrew Kew scored goals in the first period, while Thunder Hill and Alex Marinier each netted a pair to pace the Kodiaks, while Aaron Woods added one.

In the second period, Byrne scored three goals to lead and eight-goal barrage. Ryan Smith and Jackson scored two goals each, while Chris Cloutier added one. Briley Maxwell, Alex Marinier, and Brock Haley responded for the home side.

The Chiefs continued to score almost at will in the third period, Byrne, Longboat, Peterkin, Jackson, Ian Mackay and Graeme Hossack added to the lead. Haley scored the lone Kodiaks goal.

Warren Hill got his first win of the summer, making 39 stops, while Laine Hruska faced 76. shots, stopping 57.

The Chiefs are now 3-0 and return home Tuesday against the Brooklin Lacrosse Club. Game time is 8pm at the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena.
