Staats brother lead the way in Chiefs home opener

After unveiling the new championship banners, Austin and Randy Staats helped put on a show for the Six Nation Chiefs faithful at the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena Monday night.

In front of a packed house on Bread and Cheese Day, Austin scored seven times and added two assists, while Randy struck twice and added three helpers to lead the Chiefs to a 15-4 win over the Owen Sound North Stars in Major Series Lacrosse action.

The North Stars got off to a great start in its first MSL game since the early 1990s, with Curtis Hall opening the scoring.

After Austin replied, Jake McNabb struck twice to give the North Stars another lead, before Shayne Jackson and Austin tied things up to finish the first frame.

Dante Kulas scored early in the second period to keep things going for the North Stars.

That was the last time the North Stars got on the board.

The Chiefs began to flex its muscle, dominating the next 35 minutes. Austin scored three more goals, while Randy and Lyle Thompson netted a pair each during a seven-goal run in the second period.

In the third period, the Chiefs continued to find its groove. Austin added two more goals, while Ross Hill, Jackson and Zane Dalp scored one each.

Warren Hill was fantastic between the pipes for the Chiefs, as was Kaleb Martin, who faced a ton of rubber in the North Stars net.

The Chiefs aren’t back in action until June 5, when they travel to Whitby to take on Brooklin Lacrosse Club. The North Stars next game is also against BLC, but on May 29.
