Chiefs punch ticket to MSL final




Austin Staats again played the role of hero for the Six Nations Chiefs Sunday night.
Staats, who already had a six goal performance in the Major Series Lacrosse semifinal, scored four times, including the game winner in double overtime to give the zChiefs a 10-9 win over the Cobourg Kodiaks.
The win gives the Chiefs a 4-0 sweep of the best-of-seven MSL semifinal series and secures a date with the Peterborough Lakers in the league championship.
In another tight game between these two teams, Ben French, Scott Dominey and Curtis Conley scored for the Kodiaks in the first period. Sam Leclair, Austin Staats and Randy Staats responded for the Chiefs.
In the second period the Kodiaks got goals from Jake McNabb, Alex Simmons and Kealan Pilon. The Chiefs answered right back with goals from Joey Cupido, Austin Staats and Vaughn Harris.
After French scored his second of the game early in the third period, the Chiefs grabbed its first lead of the game midway through the frame on goals from Austin Staats and Harris, before Simmons sent things to extra frames with seven seconds remaining in regulation time.
In the first overtime, Cody Jamieson and Aaron Woods exchanged goals before Austin Staats’ heroics midway through the second overtime.

NOTES: While Austin Staats led all scores with six points, Brendan Bomberry was also huge for the Chiefs with four assists. Randy Staats returned to the Chiefs lineup.
