Nine-point night from Austin Staats leads Chiefs over Excelsiors

 

 

There was no stopping Austin Staats at the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena Tuesday night.

Staats scored five times and added four assists to lead the Six Nations Chiefs to a 16-7 win over the Brampton Excelsiors in Major Series Lacrosse action.

Lyle Thompson wasted no time getting the Chiefs on the board converting a Sam LeClair pass at 2:57, but was answered immediately by Alec Simons who finished off a Tyler Ferreira pass 0:27 later.  Charlie Scanlon regained the Six Nations lead banking one off the post off a Cody Jamieson feed at 5:33, but again was answered by Brampton on the power-play with Henry Follows beating Warren Hill at 7:03.

Charlie Scanlon scored his second of the night converting a Liam LeClair feed at 7:24, followed by Ben McIntosh scoring off a Brendan Bomberry pass at 8:13.  Cody Jamieson added a power-play goal off a Tyson Bell pass at 9:09, followed by Austin Staats adding another Chiefs goal off a Lyle Thompson feed 0:24 seconds later. 

Austin Staats scored the next two goals.  The first was off a Cody Jamieson feed at 18:00, followed by a beautiful goal with Staats going airborne to convert a Brendan Bomberry pass at 19:04.

The Six Nations Chiefs opened the second period scoring with Brendan Bomberry firing a howitzer from the outside off a Cody Jamieson pass at 5:11, followed by Charlie Scanlon with his third of the game off an Lyle Thompson pass at 6:06.  The barrage continued with Austin Staats scoring his fourth of the night on a bounce shot off a Tyson Bell pass in transition at 7:05.

Brampton got on the board on the power-play off a fluke of a play.   Warren Hill had made the save, but as he tried to pass the ball up the floor, it fell into his own net.  Tyler Ferreira was given credit for the goal at 12:36.  Carter Zavitz scored with a quick stick off a James Whiteford pass at 12:36.  The Excelsiors continued to press and were rewarded when Curtis Goddard converted a Henry Follows feed at 14:13. 

Six Nations added one more goal with Lyle Thompson scoring at 19:26 to increase the lead to seven.

The Chiefs opened the third period scoring when Austin Staats converted a Lyle Thompson feed at 1:11 for his fifth of the night, followed by Mason Kamminga in transition going coast to coast unassisted at 6:37.  Sam LeClair added to the Chiefs lead with an airborne play off a Tyson Bell pass at 7:19.

Josh Medeiros got the Excelsiors back on the board going in on a breakaway off a Matt Bennett pass at 8:47, but Clay Scanlan scored on the power-play off a quick stick converting a Sam LeClair pass at 12:14.  James Whiteford got one more for Brampton diving across the crease off a Tyler Ferreira at 13:06.
