Tavares named new offensive coordinator
If anyone knows offence, it's John Tavares.
And that is why he will be directing traffic for the Six Nations Pro-Fit Chiefs this summer.
The Major Series Lacrosse team has named Tavares, one of the game's most prolific scorers, its new new offensive coordinator.
"We are please and excited to announce that JT has joined our team as the offensive coordinator," Chiefs president and general manager Duane Jacobs said. "We had considered a number of highly qualified individuals over the past couple months and decided JT was our man. He needs no introduction, as he is arguable the greatest player to ever play the game of lacrosse. JT has a wealth of experience and knowledge as a player and we feel he can bring that to the coaching position. We feel he'll be a great fit for our highly skilled offence."
Tavares is the National Lacrosse League's all-time leading scorer, doing it all for the Buffalo Bandits from 1992 to 2015. During his career, Tavares scored 899 goals and 1,050 assists.
In the summer, Tavares played all of his junior lacrosse in Mississauga, before becoming a seven-time Mann Cup champion, winning in 1992 and 93 with the Brampton Excelsiors, 94, 95, 96 with the Chiefs, 2002 with the Victoria Shamrocks and 2012 with the Peterborough Lakers.
During those years, Tavares was the Major Series Lacrosse scoring champion eight times,
"I'm very excited to be back in Six Nations, but this time as the offensive coach," Tavares said. "Six Nations has one of the best teams in the OLA, with great offensive players. My job will be to bring all of these great players together to create one cohesive unit. I'm looking forward to this challenge and to help bring back the Mann Cup to Six Nations."
Another person excited Tavares is on board is head coach Rich Kilgour, who gets to be along side his former teammate again.
"I played with him for 18 seasons, coached him for five and can't wait to coach with him," Kilgour said. "We were part of the Chiefs' three Mann Cups in the 90s and hope to bring some more back to Six Nations."
